Sometimes, when you are dealing with independent music, you are going to have to do a little self-promotion. Have you ever thought of writing a press release? Well, if you don't know how to write, that is ok too, you can have someone help you. Getting your press release published in a major paper may be difficult but start with smaller papers and magazines to begin with.

After all, the job of the local papers is to report and promote activities in the local area. So, your job is to write the PR and get it to the papers for them to publish. It is also a great way to meet some music contacts, keep that in mind.

If you don't know how to write a press release or what they are all about then you are about to learn. First of all, a press release is announcement to the media about a certain event or action that is taking place. It is simply to draw media attention and is a powerful way to get your independent music noticed. So, remember, only send out exactly what you want to see in black and white.

Your next question is probably, how do I create one of these things? It is relatively simple. Whether you are in the music industry or any other industry, you want to follow the basic who, what, where, when and how about your event or activity into your PR.

For example, who is your name or the name of your band. What is the event, like a CD release or party. Where is obviously where the event that is taking place. When is the date of the event. And lastly, how can be a number of things such as the dress for the event or it may not even apply at all.

Try to give the magazine or newspaper editors as much vital information as possible in the fewest amount of words and without sounding like a sales pitch. A press release is an announcement, not a chance for you to pitch your CD or sell something. Keep it informational only. Believe me, if you try to pitch or fill it with hype then it will be edited or tossed in the trash. You want people informed of your independent music and to attend or be aware of your event so follow these steps so it will be published.

Lastly, be professional is every aspect. Make sure your spelling is correct in the mailing to the editor. Type the paper or document so it is legible. And follow the steps above to ensure you don't get your press release thrown out. Press releases are powerful ways to meet music contacts in the music industry so give it a try for your next event and see what happens! The results could be better then you ever expected!
