Within every large market there exists many smaller markets. These subset markets are often referred to as "niche" markets. For example, consider the segment of video games as one large market. Within that market there are niche markets for first person shooter games, sports games, fantasy games, family friendly games, and the list goes on.

Further broken down one can find niche markets within a given niche market. For instance, within sports video games there is a niche market of football video games. This could probably be broken down even further into buyers of pro football video games versus college football video games. As you drill down to each smaller market you are creating a sharper focus allowing for a homogenous demographic to which your message is crafted.

Which Niche Contains Your Future Customers?

Prior to even exploring various niches of your market it is incumbent upon you to determine who the target audience for your product is. What age will your customers most likely be? Which gender? What will be their interests? Determining these answers requires rudimentary market research. You might already know the answers to some or all of them. If you don't, it is necessary to find out.

Once you are aware and attuned to your potential customer base, then you can begin to research the various niches of markets to ascertain where they would most likely be found. Using the above video game example, let's assume you were selling suntan lotion. You are now looking to advertise on a few video game review web sites. Which type game review pages should contain your ad? Research could quite possibly show an overlay between those into beach volleyball video games and those who play it in real life. Many such examples exist.

Gain The Respect Of Your Niche

Assume now that you have identified applicable niche markets in order to target your given audience. What is the next step? It is to become highly fluent in all interests and concerns of that subset of customers. With such knowledge you will quickly be able to earn their respect. Visiting and participating in forums popular with the niche is a good first step.

Let's say you are a budding poet and looking to pay the bills by selling some of your better pieces. Which niche markets might be interested in such a product? Research could show an overlay with those interested in greeting card printing services. An ad placed upon a greeting card printing service or forum could possibly hit a very interested audience. This is versus attempting to advertise on a gaming review site which would only elicit snickers from those who happened to see your ad.

Study your audience. Identify the niches in which they reside. You are then ready to be fishing in the right pond bringing home a nice catch for each night's meal.
