Here are five powerful job search steps that can seriously advance your candidacy.

1. Get over the discouragement. Don't take your downsized job loss personally. Just move on.

2. Take the time to explore all your options. You're probably qualified for a lot more positions than you thought. It's time to think outside the box. A careful examination of your key capabilities, strengths and assets (not just your work history or job descriptions) will suggest other opportunities you may not have thought of.

3. Don't worry about a resume just yet. Don't make the mistake of papering the job market or the internet with your resume. It's not going to get you a job right now.
