It seems that knowing that we shouldn't date the people that we work with just makes the idea that much more irresistible. The fact of the matter is that it isn't a great idea, but if you find yourself falling for someone at work you wouldn't be the first person to have this experience.
How to Make it Work
Dating someone that you work with can be a really hard thing to do, especially when you are just getting to know one another. If you end up falling for someone that you work with, be sure that you give it a lot of thought before you ever act on your feelings. What will you do if you break up? Are there company policies against dating your co-workers? Are you or are they your direct supervisor? As you can see, there are many things to think about before you ever even date someone.
If you decide to move forward and start dating someone that you work with, the first thing that you should do is talk to the other person. Let them know that you like them but that you also like your job and you want to keep it. Go into the relationship with both of you understanding that when you are at work you are co-workers and when you are at home you have a relationship. If you start out this way, if you break up hopefully you'll be able to keep it this way.
You will also want to keep the fact that you are dating this person very quiet while at work. The last thing you need to do is stir up the rumor mill with your relationship, and office gossip can actually make dating more difficult because when people start talking it is never a good thing for a relationship. Talk about if you will let anyone know that you work with and who, and make sure that you are both comfortable with telling any co-workers before you start talking.
If things start to get rocky when you are dating someone that you are working with, leave your relationship problems at the door. Do not allow for them to taint your work or the work of the person you have been dating. Refrain from sharing your problems with your other co-workers and just pretend while at work like you have never dated. Breaking up with someone that you work with is difficult, but it can be done gracefully so long as you both are committed to it.
