Dating in college seems to take on a whole new persona in comparison to what it was in high school. High school does mark a significant advancement in relationships for most people, with holding hands in front of friends, going out with your parents as your drivers, and being in before curfew. College dating is completely different. You are completely on your own, and it is totally up to you to do the right thing by not missing classes and not staying out all night; thing like that. Suddenly in college you have the freedom to do what you want with whomever you want.

There are tons of opportunities in college to meet members of the opposite sex; classes, resident hall mixers, clubs, and groups. The first thing that many students first notice about college dating is that at activities like dancers and mixers, students want to get close, and get close fast. Many people describe the college dating scene like it is high school that is stuck in fast forward mode. Many times when people get together it is an upper class student with a freshman or younger student, which was a bit more taboo in high school.

Unfortunately, many college kids can get quickly swept off of their feet when the guys down the hall show them all this affection and attention all of a sudden. And, of course, many students get their hearts broken by thinking that the guys just loved them and wanted to be their boyfriends. This of course can happen the other way around, with the older women breaking the hearts (and prides) of young men, but more often than not, it goes the other way.

On the whole, however, the college dating scene is not always bad, and there are many successful relationships on campus and many people that marry a person that they met in college. It is tricky, trying to adjust to the sudden freedom that you are allowed to have in college, and there is a certain level of responsibility that must go with that freedom to prevent your heart being broken, or worse. It is important with college dating to stand up for yourself and take it slow! Just because you know someone from class doesnt automatically mean that he is a great choice for dating. Make sure you always have pepper spray with you whether you are on a date or not, and always make sure that if you are going out someone always knows where you are and who you will be with. Know the phone number to get a hold of the campus police should an emergency arise, and always carry your cell phone.

When it comes to college dating, safety is extremely important, not just for the good of your heart, but also for your own good as a whole. Be safe, have fun, and remember slow down!
