Going on vacation with someone can be a great experience. Together you have an opportunity to explore a new place and create great memories. However, there's a big downside to going on a holiday with someone you're dating. Suddenly you don't just see their clean and shiny date persona, but instead you get a chance to observe the real person! There's not many people can keep a mask in place for 24 hours a day over a number of days!

Vacationing together can be a positive or negative experience, and much of that has to do more with your approach to the situation rather than how your date acts.

The first thing you need to do is throw out your subconscious critic. Lower your expectations! This is a vacation; it's not a boot camp to see if your date measures up to being the perfect life partner. Accept before you leave home that you are going to see your date at their best as well as their worst during the time you are away.

When planning your vacation think about the things that you both enjoy doing. If you and your partner have very different ideas about what a vacation is about for example, if you prefer beach life but they enjoy learning about a new culture -- then you need to choose a place that caters for both of you. That way you can share the time between two different preferences. Choosing a vacation destination that only makes one of you happy will ultimately mean that one of you becomes bored so take the time to choose the perfect destination.

If your budget allows, reserve two rooms even if you intend to share a room. Having the additional room means that you have a space to call your own if you need it. You don't need to use it, but if you need it because things aren't going too well between you and your partner, or you're both feeling as if being together 24 hours a day is too much, there's an alternative that could save both your relationship as well as the vacation!

Being together constantly is a lot different to seeing each other for dates. Vacationing together is a great way of checking out whether or not you could see yourself living with your partner because you get to see them at all times of the day and night, and see how they live when they're not 'on show'.

Perhaps they're not accustomed to regular attention to personal hygiene, maybe their eating habits are not what you envisage in the person you'll be sharing meals with for the rest of your life, or perhaps they show no respect to other people or property, the behavior of your partner on vacation could be the make or break point of your relationship as you see the real person revealed to you over the course of your holiday.

Decide the reason for your vacation -- is it just because you want to take a vacation and your partner is the obvious holiday buddy, or is it because you want some quality time with your partner and perhaps hope to get to know them a little better -- maybe with a goal of deciding whether or not it's time to take the relationship to the next level. Your buddy expectations should be considerably lower than the vacation being a trial live-in period.

Vacationing with someone you care about can be a wonderful experience so try not to allow your inner critic to spoil some great memory potential. Your date is going to be discovering your secret quirks during this time too, so it's a good time to remember that relationships are all about compromise and after this time together you'll both be in a better position to know what personal habits each of you has that would need to be looked at, if any, before taking the relationship any further.
