There is nothing in the world that can compete with the brilliant sparkle of a glittering diamond. The play of light reflecting off of them is amazing. In a jewelry store display case it is so hard to pick just one.

Their shiny beauty is enough to make you want them all. Most of us are lucky if we end up with one good one, or maybe a piece of jewelry that consist of a lot of smaller ones.

Whatever the case may be, they all need a little TLC. Soaps, detergents, body lotions and natural body oil as well can contribute to spoiling the look of your diamond. You can rinse them off under a little running water and dab them dry with a soft cloth, but it will not do a lot to restore that brilliant shine they had when they were still in the store. If you wear your diamond jewelry often, it will need to be cleaned often.

If you are going to clean your jewelry at home, there are some things you need to know you can do as well as some things to not do. Some cleaners can dull your stone or leave a film on them. Some cleaners can even harm your stones and the metal they are set in. It is best to always use a product designed especially to clean jewelry.

A soft toothbrush can be used to loosen debris that may be stuck in your settings. Soaking for a short period of time, perhaps 15 minutes, will help loosen debris also. Some stones that may be set in a piece along with your diamond, such as opals, are very sensitive and can be damaged easily, so home cleaning may not be recommended for them. A soft, lint free cloth is best for drying your pieces.

If you are not sure about cleaning your precious jewels at home, you can take them to a jeweler or a jewelry store that offers cleaning. Basic cleaning is usually not very expensive and they will have the professional cleaning equipment that will return your jewelry to that show room brilliance.

They will use a polisher or buffer to shine them, then an ultra sonic cleaner to clean them, and a steamer to dry them. Some jewelers will inspect your jewelry along with your cleaning free of charge, but some may not. Either way you should make sure it is inspected.

Prongs that hold your stones in the setting can break or wear down and allow them to fall out. The clasp on necklaces, bracelets, or watches can bend and break. The condition of your jewelry's setting is just as important as how it looks!
